Overcoats have been worn for formal use throughout the world for centuries. Indicative of social status or worn as part of a professional or military uniform the overcoat has evolved; only a few have survived as classics.

Overcoats are generally long and worn below the knee or shin and are made from heavy woollen fabrics like doeskin or fur.

Topcoats are shorter than overcoats, generally worn above the knee and are lighter in weight than an overcoat.
